Jane Gibbens draws her inspiration from reflection, scale, and precision.
Having trained in the UK as a Trompe L’oeil artist, this discipline continues to heavily influence her work. Her aim is always to create the illusion of depth on a two-dimensional canvas.
Currently, Jane is exploring the concept of scaling up gemstones. By enlarging these stones, she captures the fascinating interplay of light and shadow, which is not typically visible without a magnifying glass. These intricate pieces take upwards of 100 hours to complete.
She works predominantly in oils on custom-made boards, which are exact scaled-up replicas of real jewels.
Her work achieves a unique duality: it appears photorealistic when viewed from a distance and becomes abstract when viewed up close.
Jane hopes her paintings encourage contemplation and introspection.
